Why decks and fences turn gray

A weathered deck can show gray fibers, green growth, ground-in soil and the remains of an old stain all at once, and a fence often looks different on its shady and sunny sides. That mix is why cleaning won’t leave every board exactly the same color.

Cleaning removes the buildup, and brightening can bring back a warmer, more natural tone, while the wood’s age, grain and earlier finish still show. If boards are loose or damaged, or you’re planning to stain or paint, tell us so we can plan the clean around that work.

    Low-pressure cleaning removes growth and surface soil from decks, porches and fences.

  2. Suitable brightening

    Brightening can warm up the tone of cleaned wood where it suits it. Boards won’t all end up exactly the same color.

We start with the wood and its condition: the boards, the grain and any paint or stain already on it. From there we use a compatible treatment, soft-bristle agitation where appropriate and a controlled rinse, working with the grain, and treat nearby plants as the job requires. Brightening can follow where it suits the wood. None of this replaces sanding, board repairs or refinishing. Composite decking needs its own guidance, so let us know if you have it.

Why has my deck gone silver-gray?

Sunlight weathers the outer wood fibers and turns them gray over time, and algae, mildew, soil and old coatings change the look further. Seeing what’s on the boards helps us decide how to clean them.

What does brightening actually do?

Brightening can improve the tone of cleaned wood where it suits the material. It isn’t a stain or coating, and it won’t erase the differences between old boards, repairs and less weathered sections.

If you want a particular finished color, that’s a refinishing decision beyond this service. We’ll talk through the cleaning and brightening without promising a uniform new-wood look.

Can you clean a painted or stained deck?

It depends on the coating. Sound paint or stain, peeling areas and bare worn patches are different surfaces, and we look at them before choosing how to clean. An uneven coating can still look uneven once the buildup is gone.

Tell us what finish was used, if you know, and whether you plan to refinish. Cleaning doesn’t include sanding, staining or repairing the finish.

Is composite decking treated the same as natural wood?

No. Composite has a different surface and its own manufacturer guidance. Tell us if your deck is composite so we clean it appropriately rather than treating it like natural wood.

Will cleaning make an old fence look new?

Cleaning removes growth and surface soil, so it can reveal much more of the wood than you see now. It doesn’t change the age, grain or shape of the boards, newer repair boards may stay a different color, and rough or damaged wood still needs separate attention.

The fair comparison is your fence before and after cleaning, not a fence of new lumber.

My fence is shared with a neighbor. Which side do you clean?

Your quote should name the sides you want cleaned. Tell us whether it’s one face or both, and describe access along each side; a photo of the fence line helps. The side facing your neighbor isn’t included just because the boards are shared. The agreed area sets the work.
